Mindfulness Exercise – Mindful Breathing
The easiest way to get started practicing mindfulness is to begin with this simple breathing exercise. You can perform this exercise either sitting up or standing. Here are the steps:
- Sit in a position that is comfortable for you.
- Next, begin by breathing in and out through your nose slowly and effortlessly. Notice the temperature of the cool air coming in your nose and the warm air leaving. Feel as this cleansing breathe travels down into your lungs, providing your body with the air it needs to function, and then flows out, taking with it any stress built up from your workday.
- Focus on trying to achieve a three to six second breathing cycle, taking anywhere from 3-6 seconds to breathe in slowly, and 3-6 seconds to breathe out; choose an amount of time that is most comfortable for you.
- Allow all thoughts to come and go as they please.
Practicing this simple breathing exercise is a relaxing way to start bringing mindfulness into your everyday work life.
